Tapas- Burning zeal or discipline in practice

Svadhyaya- self study

Ishvara Pranidhana- devotion to the lord These three practices work together: A bit of reflection will show clearly how the three principles (tapas, svadhyaya, ishvara pranidhana) work together. The principles are really familiar to us all, but seeing them clustered together as a single mode of spiritual practice is very useful. The mind can easily remember the three principles together as a single practice; it becomes a companion in daily life.

The Iyengar Yoga practice stresses body alignment to obtain the maximum benefits of any pose and avoid injury. It emphasises holding poses or asanas over long periods as against quick movement of the asanas. It also makes use of props such as yoga blankets, cushions, blocks, sand bags and straps in order to bring the body into alignment. Undoubtedly, these props used under the watchful supervision of the teachers are great help for beginners to practice the art of asanas with little difficulty and exhaustion. Some Iyengar Yoga practioners say if one is suffering from any physical ailment this yoga would help, besides making ones limbs stronger, increase vitality, improve circulation, coordination and balance in the body.

Vitarkah himsadayah krta karita anumoditah lobha krodha moha purvakah mrdu madhya adhimatrah duhkha ajnana anantaphalah iti pratipaksabhavanam

Negative feelings, such as violence, are damaging to life, whether we act upon them ourselves, or cause or condone them in others. They are born of greed, anger or delusion and may be slight, moderate or intense. Their fruit is endless ignorance and suffering. To remember this is to cultivate the opposite.
